Wood Siding: Board and Batten

Board-and-batten is a classic tradition in America that’s been in use in our nation since it was founded. It’s sometimes called barn siding, and it’s a vertical look that’s made with wide boards, like pine or cedar, and it’s spaced with stripes that are thinner, the battens, and they cover places where wide boards merge. There aren’t any regular batten or board spacings or widths, so you can innovate as you choose. It’s possible to make varying patterns with different sizes of battens and boards.

The siding can directly installed over a surface that’s flat like plywood, and there would be a barrier for the moisture in between them. Boards that are wide are put down first, and after that, the battens cover up the spaces in the gaps in the boards too.
